Worn to be Wild

I love the look of a black leather jacket. It is timeless and cool, and it can be styled to be classy, edgy, etc. There is even a traveling exhibit about the culture behind it, read more here! There is however, a HORRIBLE end to the awesomeness: the leather. So, I am always on the lookout for a faux leather jacket. Like this one!!

This was my furniture shopping outfit! Easy and casual, leaving it to the jacket to create a pulled together look. I found this faux leather jacket at the Dallas Buffalo Exchange, an amazing thrift store! The shirt was also found at a thrift store, as well as the key necklace. The jeans and belt are old. And the lipstick is an old color from Flower Beauty. I LOVE buying clothes at thrift stores. They are unique, ethical, environmentally friendly, and often cheaper. But I am not able to share where to find them. So instead, here are some options I found that could recreate a similar look.

Jacket: Rebel Vegan Leather Jacket (I may have to buy this one for myself soon!!)

Top: Cardinal Burnout Pocket Tee (LOVE)

Jeans: On the Road Skinny Jeans

Belt: Peace Sign Belt Buckle

Lipstick: Devocean Natural Lipstick in Rebel Sol

Key Necklace: Silver Key Necklace

Arrow Necklace: Arrow Pendant (This is the actual necklace that I have!)

Pacifica’s Stellar Gaze Mascara

I love a good mascara. Without that final sweep of mascara on my lashes, I always feel a little incomplete. I have tried several different vegan mascaras, but this was my most recent purchase. This was actually my second tube of Pacifica’s Stellar Gaze Length & Strength Mineral Mascara. I have purchased the Supernova color both times!

Best Part: I love the tube and brush! It applies evenly and the color is nice and dark. I will definitely say that this is the best vegan mascara that I have found at Target, making it easily accessible and affordable! I think the ease of purchasing it on my normal trip to the store makes it a go-to when I am running low on mascara.

Worst Part: Unfortunately, I do think this wears off throughout the day. I find that by the evening, I need to reapply. I am looking forward to trying the waterproof option (here) that they sell to see if it lasts longer.

Overall Rating: As I said above, I will continue to purchase this mascara! I may try out other brands of vegan mascara and see if I prefer any others, but this is an easy and inexpensive purchase! For me, this mascara is worth the price every time!!

Company Rating: All of Pacifica’s beauty products are 100% vegan and 100% cruelty free!! All of their boxes are 100% recyclable, and the company states that their goal is to “have zero product-manufacturing waste in our factory.” They produce as much as they can in the U.S. and they work with local charities. Overall, a great company that you can learn more about, here.

Wednesday Wants

1. 2015 Planner by Fox and Wit / 2. Alta Gracia Rolled Tee by Barnes and Noble / 3. Alma Otter Tape Dispenser by ModCloth / 4. Cucumber and Apple Reviving Face Mask by Montagne Jennesse

In this upcoming week I will start one of my last seasons of undergraduate courses! Therefore, my wants this week are to help me prepare for this semester’s classes and work. This particular SMU shirt will help me show my Mustang pride, while at the same time giving a living wage to the workers who make these garments. And just for safe measure I have thrown in a facial mask for those times that I know I will need to relax and de-stress! -Maddie

1. Smolder Eye Liner Gel in Midnight by Pacifica / 2. 60s Vintage Clutch by Minxouri Vintage / 3. Bejeweled and Beloved Heel by ModCloth / 4. Zadie Bell Dress in Pink by Mata Traders at Ruche / 5. Vintage 1930s Dark Navy Blue Midnight Velvet Art Deco Bow Tie Evening Cape by Great Lake Outfitters

I have been obsessing over the vintage clothing and accessories on Etsy lately. I need this blue velvet cape in my closet, right now! So this entire outfit was inspired by how amazingly beautiful this one piece is. xoxo -Cecilia

Shortbread Cookies

My love for cookies is no secret. In fact, quite the opposite. Our mom consistently made huge chocolate chip cookies and I love the way they filled the whole house with the smell of baking cookies. Although I couldn’t be with my family (or my mom’s cookies) for the holidays, I have been baking way too much.

This recipe for shortbread cookies was bandaged together from bits and pieces of many many different recipes that I found in old cook books and online. I have heard of people using coconut oil or other types of oil for vegan shortbread, but I wanted that buttery taste, so I used (a lot) of vegan butter, and I think it created the perfect consistency. These were amazing out of the oven! They continued to be yummy, but they didn’t last long, so I can’t attest to how long they will keep. If you are anything like me, they will be eaten too quickly to care.

3/4 cup of vegan butter (I chose Earth Balance Original)

1/2 cup organic granulated sugar

1 tbsp almond milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

1  1/2 cup all purpose flour

Preheat oven to 300. Lightly oil baking sheet (I chose coconut oil).

In small bowl combine the butter and sugar, stir well.

Add the almond milk and vanilla extract, continue to stir well.

Add the flour slowly and continue to mix until completely combined.

Shape the dough into small balls and place approximately 1 inch apart on baking sheet.

Bake for 18-25 minutes. Begin to check on cookies around minute 18. They should be lightly browned on the bottom.

Then eat while hot!

Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Set

arganoilreviewI have a serious addiction to trying every facial trend that appears in the beauty universe. I’ve tried a ludicrous amount of facial cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliators, serums, and any other skin product you can think of.

So when I started hearing great things about the beauty powers of argan oil, I obviously had to try it. I decided to start slow by purchasing one of Josie Maran’s gift sets (the specific gift set is no longer sold on their website, but other great ones are available). I settled on the one that came with 4 products: 100% pure argan oil, argan cleansing oil,  argan balm, and argan oil hair serum.

Best part:  It’s unbelievably moisturizing! I have been using the pure argan oil on my face every night for about 3 weeks now, and I cannot tell you how much I love it. Not only does it feel luxurious to just rub oil all over your face, but I have experienced significantly clearer skin as well. Especially in the winter months, my skin tends to get really dry, but this oil keeps my skin moisturized even until the next morning. A family friend told me I was “glowing” when she saw me on New Years Eve, and I have to give all the credit to this oil!

My other favorite product in this set was the hair serum. My hair not only feels softer but it looks so much healthier and shiny. Honestly I’m having a hard time keeping my hands out of my hair right now!!

Worst part: The facial cleanser. While this may work for some people, for me it wasn’t cleansing enough. It left my face feeling like I still had a layer of make-up, and left me unimpressed.

While I enjoyed the argan balm and like to use it as chapstick, and hand moisturizer, I don’t use it all that often. I have so many other products that work as well, if not better, than this balm, that it tends to get tossed to the side.

Overall rating: While I ended up not liking the cleansing oil, I LOVED the pure argan oil, and the hair serum so much that I am going to give this 4 1/2 stars. I will absolutely re-purchase those two products as soon as I run out. I’m seriously obsessed!

Company rating: Josie Maran products are cruelty-free! Josie Maran uses “fair-trade practices, sustainably harvested ingredients, and eco-friendly packaging.” Learn more about how great Josie Maran is and the great groups that they partner with here.

A Detroit Winter

wsswinterstyle-3278winterstyle-3296winterstyle-3337We were so happy and excited to spend a few days together in Detroit with our family before Christmas. Though we filled our days with shopping, football games, and eating, we managed to find time to shoot a few photographs. Despite the very chilly weather, we even managed to venture outdoors!!

All of the clothes we wore on the trip we have owned for awhile, so instead I found items that were as close as possible.

On Maddie:

Women’s Winter Jacket (I love the black color with the floral interior!)

Faux Leather Booties with Fringe

Knit Infinity Scarf

Maddie’s sweatshirt was bought in Paris

On Cecilia:

Hair Scarf (I wear this ALL the time!)

Olive Green Jacket

Floral and Polka Dot Scarf

Petit Vour Box – December 2014

I always love getting my Petit Vour box in the mail, and this month I got it in time to open on Christmas morning! Both Maddie and I love the idea of getting a monthly beauty box (who doesn’t love getting surprises?)! Although we have tried a couple that we liked, Petit Vour was the box that made us the happiest. The product sizes they send are perfect to really try out each one, and they have just the right variety to keep us guessing! You can find out more about the amazing Petit Vour box here!

Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Cream: I have now used several different vegan deodorants that must be applied by hand. I like the consistency of this one the most! As soon as I use up the sample sizes, I will definitely be purchasing more of this product. I also love the lavender smell, but it does come in tea tree and a grapefruit one as well. You can purchase this deodorant from Petit Vour (here) or from the Meow Meow Tweet website (here).

Blissoma Smooth A+ Perfecting Serum: This was a surprise for me, and not something I have used previously. I began using this each night as a spot treatment before bed, and although I can’t say that it is definitively working, I am definitely going to continue using this product. You can purchase this serum from Petit Vour (here) or from the Blissoma webiste (here).

Everyday Minerals Blush in All Smiles: I LOVE THIS BLUSH! I have been searching for the perfect blush to replace my previous non-vegan blush. This is everything I have been looking for. I would recommend this to anyone; I love the matte finish and the summery peach color. Just make sure you have a great cruelty free brush to apply! This blush is sold out on the Petit Vour site, but you can buy the other colors on the Everyday Minerals website (here). I may try out the Field of Roses color next!

Trust Fund Beauty Nail Lacquer in Just Talk to My Lawyer: I have a soft spot for nail polish, and seem to collect it faster than anything else. This color was dark and perfect for winter, while still having enough red sparkle to shine in the sunlight! I love it. I had not heard of Trust Fund before, but now I look forward to purchasing more polishes from them! You can purchase this nail polish from Petit Vour (here) or from the Trust Fund Beauty website (here).

Furniture Redo!

When I recently moved to Florida, we got rid of several pieces of college furniture that had seen one-too-many parties in our past apartments. But to replace them, I had two requirements. {1.} Something that was different and would have enough character to cheer up our very spare apartment. {2.} Something that didn’t break the bank, but still was eco-friendly and didn’t leave us with a lot of wrapping trash/product that we couldn’t recycle.

We found all of these new pieces at a furniture thrift shop near us, and couldn’t be happier! After a few coats of primer and paint, along with some new knobs, I LOVE these pieces. Especially this adorable dresser that we have turned into a t.v. stand. I can’t wait to see how this can be redone again and again as we continue to move and grow!

We bought all of these pieces for 50 dollars from C&D Secondchance! The paint and handles cost us 80 dollars, leaving us with the overall cost of 130 dollars for all of these new pieces!!

After photos:

I am still working on decorating our apartment, but I love these pieces and it already feels more like a home! I love that these pieces have had a life before and I love how recycling these pieces was both economical but also an eco-friendly choice!
